چکیده
in vitro and in vivo can be attributed to crowding? The answer to this question depends upon the particular reaction and the microscopic environment in which the reaction is taking place. Early demonstrations of the large effect of crowding on association equilibria and rates were based upon studies of the behavior of mutant and normal hemoglobins in erythrocytes. Hemolysate is a fairly simple fluid containing primarily hemoglobin, and it can be shown that volume exclusion is a dominating factor in this medium. However, in a more complex heterogeneous environment such as cytoplasm, crowding is probably just one of several nonspecific factors affecting reaction rates and equilibria, such as weak nonspecific associations with background molecules or large structures leading to possible sequestration or adsorption of reactants and/or products. Nevertheless it is essential to keep in mind that, in a crowded biological fluid, the effects of volume exclusion will always be present and play an important role in influencing macromolecular structure and function, independent of and in addition to the influences of other types of interactions. The ubiquity of this phenomenon in biological fluids has been compared to that of gravity. The influence of macromolecular crowding and macromolecular confinement on biochemical reactions in physiological media. Influence of macromolecular crowding upon the stability and state of association of proteins: predictions and associations. University at Baton Rouge, and Shannon Hackett at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago have studied a stretch of coding region in the MC1R gene in 23 individuals spanning the range of male plumage variation (published online in Proceedings B of the Royal Society). The only variable sites they detected were for synonymous substitutions, none of which were associated with either plumage type. Comparative analysis of the sequences at three amino acid sites thought to be functionally important in pigment variations in other species proved to be similar in these birds. This new study suggests that other mechanisms are at play. Many loci are known to influence pigmentation in vertebrates so " future studies exploring other candidate genes, especially those with regulatory functions, are likely to provide great insight into our understanding of the evolution of avian plumage colour, " the authors report. Bird plumage traits are the targets of both natural and sexual selection and fascinate evolutionary biologists as many species show quite dramatic variations within their range and between related species. So, genetic changes resulting in plumage …

Theories relating baryon asymmetry and dark matter
*Correspondence: Stefano Morisi, Institut für Theoretische Physik und Astrophysik, Universität Würzburg, Campus Hubland North, Emil-Hilb-Weg 22, 97074 Würzburg, Germany e-mail: [email protected] The nature of dark matter and the origin of the baryon asymmetry are two of the deepest mysteries of modern particle physics. In the absence of hints regarding a possible solution to these myster...
متن کاملPolarimeter Receiver Prototyping and Testing for the South Pole Telescope Upgrade
Experimental evidence has so far been supportive for the inflationary Big Bang model of cosmology, while imposing other mysteries, such as the fact that dark matter and dark energy actually consist of 95% of the observable universe. The forthcoming upgrade of the South Pole Telescope, planned for 2010, will include a polarimeter with increased sensitivity. Measurements of the CMB polarization a...
متن کاملSearching For Dark Matter with Neutrino Telescopes
One of the most interesting mysteries of astrophysics is the puzzle of dark matter. Although numerous techniques have been explored and developed to detect this elusive substance, its nature remains unknown. One such method uses large high-energy neutrino telescopes to look for the annihilation products of dark matter annihilations. In this summary article, we briefly review this technique. We ...
متن کاملDark matter distribution in the universe and ultra - high energy cosmic rays
Two of the greatest mysteries of modern physics are the origin of the dark matter in the universe and the nature of the highest energy particles in the cosmic ray spectrum. We discuss here possible direct and indirect connections between these two problems, with particular attention to two cases: in the first we study the local clustering of possible sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UH...
متن کاملDark Matter in Cosmology
The last two decades in cosmological research have been an exciting time, and produced an exciting product: we now have in hand a “standard model” of cosmology. While several aspects of this model remain mysterious, its predictions are in remarkable accord with a vast range of observational data. A key aspect of this model, and one of the aforementioned mysteries, is the dark matter: a cold, co...
متن کاملGravitational lensing: a unique probe of dark matter and dark energy
I review the development of gravitational lensing as a powerful tool of the observational cosmologist. After the historic eclipse expedition organized by Arthur Eddington and Frank Dyson, the subject lay observationally dormant for 60 years. However, subsequent progress has been astonishingly rapid, especially in the past decade, so that gravitational lensing now holds the key to unravelling th...
